Content categories covered include still images, moving images (video), textual documents, recorded sound (audio), web archives, datasets, geospatial resources, and generic digital formats intended as wrappers or packages for any type of digital content.En résumé : L'une des tâches de la bibliothèque du congrès américain est de préserver les documents numériques. Afin de mener cela à bien, ses membres ont listé les différents formats de fichiers existants, et ont apprécié leurs qualités.
Quelques exemples de formats privilégiés :
- Texte structuré : XML et SGML
- Texte mis en page : PDF/A, HTML, ODF
- Images fixes : TIFF, JP2 (JPEG 2000), PNG, GIF, BMP
- Vidéos pour utilisateurs finaux : MPEG 2, MPEG 4, MPEG 1
